{Home} Holiday House Tour 2011

We participated in the Holiday House Tour in our little New Jersey town on Friday night, and it was so much fun. We had approximately 125 people walk through our home, and everyone was such a pleasure to talk to. It was a great community building experience as well. After working a full day on Friday and running home to quickly finish up a few last minute things before the tour started, I was only left with a few minutes to snap pics {please excuse the poor lighting in some of them}.

Just to give you a little history -- our home is on old farmhouse that was built in the late 1800's. In the early 1990's a woman bought the home and poured her heart and soul into restoring it. She replaced the electric, took down plaster and added drywall, put in a new kitchen, added a small 1/2 bath on the first floor, added wide plank hardwood floors throughout the entire home, enclosed the once open staircase, and added custom built-ins and a brick fireplace in the dining room. She did a lovely job on all of the renovations and that is ultimately why my husband and I ended up buying the home in May 2009. We love the character and charm of an old home; however, we also love the modern conveniences that newer homes have to offer. This is a perfect marriage of the two -- an old home that has been updated without comprising it's historic charm.

Here is a walk-through -- WELCOME! As you will be able to see from the pictures, I love mixing the old with the new. First up is our family room, which faces the front of the home. It's a cozy room and we love hanging in there together as a family and playing with our son. Last year we added the built-in bench in the window alcove.

Next up is the dining room. This is the room you walk into when you come through the front door. This is also where we entertain when we host dinner parties and holiday celebrations.

Now you see the other side of the dining room. The previous owner added the large built in surrounding the fireplace. She used the original closet doors from the upstairs bedrooms to create the cabinets. The cabinets provide four nice sized storage compartments with shelving {not sure what I'd do without them!}.

Another angle -- just past the cubby unit and behind the built in is the enclosed staircase leading you up to the second floor.

The back of the home houses our little kitchen. We recently added a new tile floor, and made some changes when we first moved in in 2009 {added a white tile backsplash, added a glass panel to the top corner cabinet, and installed pendant lights above the kitchen island}. We are contemplating painting our island soon. I'm still thinking about it....hmmm....I love that look but....I'm a little nervous!

Most recently, we also added a small built-in desk/single bench seat {remember -- small spaces we are working with here ;-}.

This is a better shot of the built-in. I had a seamstress make me a fabric covered bench cushion, and I found a 12 x 18 black and white chevron pillow on Etsy -- perfectly sized for this small space. The pillow picks up on the chevron pattern I used on the kitchen rug I painted this summer. We also added two shelves with hidden brackets above the unit. I'm still not completely finished with this area, and will hopefully be adding a few more simple and subtle touches soon {pics when I'm finished}.

Another angle....

Attached to the kitchen is a small mud room that houses a small half bath {not pictured} and a built-in pantry we added after we moved in. Part of the pantry features open shelving {as seen above} and the other half has doors {behind the door}. Just beyond the mudroom is a tiny back porch that we enclosed with windows after moving in {it had been screened in}.

I snapped this picture while standing in the enclosed porch and looking into the mudroom. The big closet doors hide our stackable washer/dryer and a coat closet on the other side.

We added storage lockers to our back porch last year, and it was one of the best moves we've made. Each of us has a cubby, and we use them every day and all year long!

Let's head upstairs now -- this enclosed stairway definitely took a little getting used to when we first moved in.

One of my favorite things about our upstairs is the huge open landing area we have. It makes the second floor feel a little more roomy. In the open landing area, I added a bench with cubbies, a shelf, and a second Christmas tree. This tree used to sit in my mom's kitchen ;-}

The lone full bath is the first door you come to once you reach the top of the steps. We recently added a new tile floor and bought a new toilet {pictured below -- lol}. We love the clawfoot tub {but not so much taking a shower in it ;-}

I found the little black footstool under the window at Home Goods this summer and snagged it right away. It saves my back from breaking when I bathe my son every night in that tub!

The new toilet -- it sounds silly but even my husband loved this toilet when we saw it in Lowes! We love the square back and base.

This is our master bedroom.

Another angle...

My son's nursery....

This is the other side of the room. I've spend my fair share of time in that chair -- thank goodness it's super comfy ;-}

Changing table and dresser....

And last but not least is our back bedroom, which is a craft room/office. This will eventually become Dean's big boy bedroom in the future when our family grows. At that point, my craft room will move to our third floor attic, which we finished when we moved in -- one side is my closet and the other side will become the craft room.

My hubby's desk and home office area is across from my craft station.

The lighting isn't so hot but this gives you an idea as to what the outside looks like when the Christmas lights are turned on. Simple.

Lanterns adorn my front steps leading up to my door.

And lastly is my garage. We just had electric run out to the garage and added a lantern to give a little light to that area, which is very dark if unlit.

***The tour was on Friday night and on Saturday night, there was a private tour for the homeowners followed by a soup dinner at the Little Red School House. The homes were so nice to look through. The Bodo Otto House in Mickleton was MAGNIFICANT. I've wanted to see this home for YEARS. Dating back to the 1700's with ties to the Revolutionary War, this home featured seven fireplaces and so many unique, historic features -- there was a story to be told about each and every room. The owners might be putting it up for sale soon -- too bad it's WAY out of my price range at 600K+. Boooooohoooooo -- I WANT it!

{Home Decorating} Patriotic Mantle

I always have and always will LOVE Independence Day. It's one of my favorite holidays, and rapidly approaching, so I did a quick mantle makeover in the name of red, white & blue.

It's just the way I like it -- SIMPLE.

I used some sparkly stars from Target's dollar bins {last year} and some sparkly star picks from Joann's {this year} to add some patriotic flare.

**Check out my Fourth of July Flair board on Pinterest to see more adorable Independence Day ideas {and I'm still adding to it}!

{HomeGoods} Just Happened to Find...

...a PB Eagan multipanel mirror knockoff! I made a post a few weeks ago about how I had fallen in love with this mirror. After some thought, I kind of decided that I WANTED, not NEEDED it. So, I put it out of my mind until I made a pitstop in the Cape May Courthouse HomeGoods/TJ Maxx about a week ago on a fall beach weekend with my boys. I was looking for a rug for my back porch, not at all intending to buy a mirror, and there it was. Dead center in a sea of glimmering reflections. Staring me square in the face. Calling my name. Only two of it's kind available for purchase. An "almost" exact replica of the mirror I loved. It was meant to be, and it was a STEAL, so I HAD to buy it. You'd have done the same, right?!

{Autumn} Just a Glance....

...at what FALL looks like in my home. Oh, how I LOOOOVE the fall! And I'm taking advantage of every single second of it with my family so far. I hope you are too!

{Home} Lockers = Done!

FINALLY!!! I can now say, "only" five months after my original locker post, that my lockers are officially done. I am still looking for a rug for the space, but the lockers themselves are ready to be filled {I decided not to add cushions because I love the crisp, clean simplicity of this piece....cushions not necessary!}.

At the start of all this "locker" business, my plan was to have them custom built and attached to the wall on our back porch. However, after waiting for what seemed like ages for the quote, we realized we just didn't want to spend THAT MUCH on something that we couldn't take with us if we ever decided to move. So....onto Plan B we went and the search began....

I have to hand it to my husband, Bo. He is so GOOD at finding exactly what I want for a price that fits our budget {and not to mention very patient with his oh-so picky wife;-}. He found these lockers at Howard Hill, an unfinished furniture store in Penn Sauken. I'll admit, I never thought I'd find what I was looking for without them being custom built. Goes to show you how much I know! I LOVE these lockers because....

~ They were affordable
~ They do not overwhelm the small space they now occupy
~ I was able to customize them A LOT {ie: hardware, how many lockers I wanted, size of lockers, doors on bottom or no doors, openings at top for baskets or no openings, beadboard on back or no beadboard....and the list goes on}.
~ Each of us has a basket at the top for anything we want {hats, gloves, scarves, etc}
~ There is a spacious area under the locker space for shoes or whatever you'd like to store down there
~ We were able to paint them whatever color we wanted
~ We can take them with us if we move one day {not to mention they give potential buyers a great idea of how to maximize the space on the back porch}

So, I guess they were worth the wait afterall. Next up? Small kitchen project....hope it turns out they way I have envisioned. Once again and as always, I'm on the hunt for more storage, space and seating in my cozy, little home :-}

STAY TUNED: {LOTS of FUN projects on the horizon!}

{Home Improvements} Lockers...

...are just about finished....phew! Once the space is completely finished, I'll post better pics but for now, just a little peek! Bo still has to add trim around the bottom of them, touch up some of the paint, and I need to shop for baskets and a new rug for the room as well. Possible seat cushions might make an appearance too...we'll see if I actually have the time to squeeze that into my already jam-packed life...ughh! Can't wait to be able to FINALLY use these!

{Office/Craft Room Storage} Old Glass Hutch Top

I never thought I'd hear myself say this...BUT...I've run out of storage cubbies in my craft table already. My papers and envelopes and fabrics and threads and buttons and all of my other crafts have filled those cubbies to the brim. So...still on the hunt for storage, I had an idea for my craft area...

I want to refinish an old glass hutch top (just the top), mount it on the wall, and fill it like crazy with "crafty stuff". My husband has already shot down my idea, but I haven't given up hope just yet. You see, his mom has an old glass hutch top in her garage right now that my FIL is dying to get out of there. They need a taker. Right over here!!! Me Me!!! If he's still resistant, I might just have to suggest a smaller glass hutch option...similar to one that would go in a powder room instead of a dining room???

Most of my furniture is black, and that's always an option, but I'm really loving the look of one piece of furniture in a room that is painted a color. I'm thinking maybe a pretty light turquoisy blue color. Or maybe a light pink color. My to-do list keeps getting longer and longer :)

I will post pics when it's finished (that is if I can convince Bo to hang it for me :)

{Small Touches} Dish Soap

I had another great find at Target today (my mom helped me with this one as it was her idea). I've been looking for a cute soap dispenser for the dish soap in my kitchen. I think those bottles are such an eye sore....actually, maybe it's just the bright orange soap inside of them that kinda bugs me.

In the bathroom section of Target, they have really cute glass soap dispensers in a lot of different colors. I didn't want or need it for my bathroom, but it was just what I was looking for for my kitchen! They are so cute and can add such a great splash of color.

{Home Improvements} Storage Lockers are Underway!

The storage locker plans are underway - WOOHOO! I'm beyond excited because now I'll have a little extra "attractive" storage in my home (and I won't have to see my husband's jacket and work bag in my dining room anymore).

Carl of Minimi Builders (he is very meticulous and does excellent work - he installed all of our new windows last spring and did a fantastic job) stopped over yesterday to look at our space and draw up some plans.

I'm hoping that my lockers will be a combination of these first two pictures. I like different things about each. I'd love to take the lockers to the ceiling and have some pretty molding (like the picture above). I also love the wanes cotting that is on the back of the lockers. However, I like the underneath area of the lockers below. I plan on using the underneath space for baskets that will hold shoes. I also like the bench better in the second set of lockers...it's a little more spacious looking. Hopefully, Carl will be able to take what I like about each and create a custom look for us.

I LOVE the lockers below; however, I just don't have the space for these. Maybe in another life (or home). I really love how seat cushions were added to this space. I'm hoping to do that to my new space as well. I might just have to get really crafty and make my own! We'll see....

{Outdoor Spaces} Hanging Baskets

Will my LOVE for beautiful flowers ever cease? I highly doubt it...

I've gotten a ton of compliments on these hanging baskets that adorn the front porch of my sweet, little, old, yellow charmer. As a matter of fact, last week a woman driving by my home randomly stopped to ask me where I bought my hanging baskets. Funny, huh?

Moore's Greenhouse is the answer. I love it there and purchase my mums for the fall and all of my spring/summer flowers there as well. It's very clean, the flowers are well cared for, and the owners are very helpful...they've even carried my flowers to my car for me when I have the baby with me. Check them out...you won't be sorry!

{Home Improvements} Entryway Storage

I LOVE this entryway storage system from Pottery Barn! I am always on the lookout for ways to add extra storage areas to my home. My husband and I had a built-in pantry added last summer to give us more space for food, and now I'm thinking about having someone build something similar to this on my back porch, which we just had closed in over this past winter.

Using PB as my inspiration, my plan is to add 3 or 4 "lockers" with a connecting bench housing baskets underneath. One for Bo, me, and Dean. Each locker would have hooks for hanging our jackets and work/school bags. The baskets underneath could be used for shoes.

When you live in a small home, clutter tends to build up quickly, and I HATE clutter. Hopefully, this will help with that! I'm going to get a move on this project ASAP, and I'll post pictures when it's completed!

{Shopping} Great Target Deal!

My latest Target find: a neutral colored co-sleeper for $40!!! I was doing a little shopping the other day and mosied on over to the baby clearance section of the store. Much to my delight, I found this! Originally almost three times the cost of what I paid, I snatched this bad boy up and headed to the register! It fits nicely in our master bedroom and will be perfect for my little guy.

New Back Porch - Thank Goodness!

I've been wanting to have my back porch enclosed for a while. I don't even have a "before" shot to post, but it was basically screened in from the top to the bottom. Lots of dust, dirt, and wet floors whenever it rained. A major pain was what it was. So, we had it enclosed. It's nothing fancy but much nicer than before. My husband still has to finish painting the trim (it will all be white in the next week). In addition to the bench, I plan on adding a coat rack that we can use for our own coats or our guests can use when they come over. And, I was finally able to put up the little Christmas tree with white twinkly lights that I've been dying to add! A little late, but hey, the porch was just finally finished on Sunday. Better late than never!

My House: Fall Decor

{The dining room}

{The mantle looks so pretty at night when I light the little tealights tucked inbetween the berries - the picture doesn't do it justice!}

{My new IKEA frames....waiting until the baby arrives to fill those!}

{The kitchen island - I bought this pumpkin at Home Goods and again, the picture doesn't show how pretty it is. It's much more sparkly and glamorous in person!}

{The front porch - a little dark but had to take the picture in the dark to capture the lit pumpkin, which is my fav! Notice the little pumpkins I placed above the door :o)}

Fall is in the air, and I'm already in love with the season! What can I say, I absolutely adore the crispness in the air, the apples, the pumpkins, the mums, the spiced pumpkin lattes, the firepit fires, and I could go on and on. Needless to say, I spent most of last weekend prepping my home for the new season, including pulling out all of my fall decorations and visiting a greenhouse in my area to purchase mums and pumpkins for my front porch and back patio. I have to say....everything looks so much cuter in person....the pictures just don't cut it, but they at least give an idea as to how it looks. I don't like too many decorations, just a touch! Check it out!

COMING SOON: I have many projects I am currently working on and can't wait to feature on my blog. Keep your eyes peeled for my FALL CUPCAKE TOPPERS - they are so cute! I will be posting them later this week!
